Transformer Services Supervisor – California

Position Summary

The Transformer Service Supervisor is a working field service supervisor responsible for assignment of personnel, environment, safety, and overall performance of crew/contractors on field projects. The Transformer Service Supervisor is the primary expert in assembly, service, and repair of transformers, although Transformer Service Supervisor, and crew, may be assigned to other work individually or as part of a larger electrical substation or powerplant. The Transformer Service Supervisor is responsible for the successful execution of projects and supervising, both technically and administratively, crew members and assigned contractor(s) and is expected to take decisive and/or corrective action for the well-being of the crew, environment, project, customer, and/or organization as a whole.

The Transformer Service Supervisor reports to the Transformer Operations Manager and shall have effective communication with their manager throughout active projects and when awaiting assignment or standby time. Effective communication with Project Managers (PMs), Commercial Operations Manager, and Quality Test Expert Manager, is also needed. The Transformer Service Supervisor must seek approval from the Transformer Operations Manager prior to re-assigning a crew member. When considered necessary, the Foreman may remove crew member(s) from jobsite if safety or behavior is not in compliance with Service Electric Company policies, guidelines, or safety policies.

The Transformer Service Supervisor is responsible for company assets, including the maintenance, cleanliness, safe operation, and condition of equipment/vehicles (assigned, rented, loaned, or leased), and the corresponding contents, tools, and accessories.

The position often requires extensive travel and non-standard schedules at field locations with exposure to varying environmental conditions.

This role will work in California, and there will be travel compensation.

 

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Follow and enforce Service Electric Company Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) policies with assigned crew.
  • Monitor and maintain tools, equipment, and company vehicles.
  • Manage vendors/subcontractors assigned to their crew to perform duties in accordance with local, customer, industry, and corporate laws, regulations, and/or standards.
  • Ensure projects are on time and within budget performance of assigned projects. Obtain budget parameters of assigned projects.
  • Maintain effective communication with site contact for coordination and project management, including daily written or verbal updates with PM and/or Transformer Operations Manager including project changes, safety reviews (i.e., tailgate meetings), safety incidents (near misses, safety violations, environmental incidents, security incidents), work scope changes, etc.
  • Responsible for time, expense, and field service job reports online/administrative tools or software. Record and compile data for analysis and assist in related assessment and preparation of reports.
  • Perform quarterly technical evaluations of crew members, utilizing technical evaluation forms. This may include on-the-spot corrective actions of assigned crew members.
  • Perform brazing and crimping of transformer leads with technical knowledge of proper clearances and IEEE standard of reinsulating leads. Also required to train less experienced personnel on this duty.
  • Demonstrate expert level proficiency in other job classifications Transformer Technician Level 1, Transformer Technician Level 2, Transformer Technician Level 3, Senior Transformer Technician Level 4.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by direct manager.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, GED, technical vocational/apprenticeship training combined with prior field service or equivalent related experience.
  • Demonstrated expert in combined field service technical assembly, maintenance, and repair of power and distribution transformers and transformer accessories in the utility/energy electrical industry.
  • Special skill set in one or more of: Distribution, Power, and Transmission electrical substation equipment in power ranges of low-voltage (4160V – 13kV), medium-voltage (13kV – 69kV), and high-voltage (69kV – 800 kV) highly preferred.
  • Prior experience training and/or education as a field lead, foreman, or supervisor
  • Effective communications skills and ability to lead.
  • Time management and analytical skills
  • Team player with a positive attitude
  • EH&S/OSHA 30 and NFPA-70 training required or will be provided by SEC to the employee.
  • CPR/First Aid training is a preferred or will be provided by SEC to the employee.
  • Must perform proficiently at other less senior technical levels Transformer Technician Level 1, Transformer Technician Level 2, Transformer Technician Level 3, Senior Transformer Technician Level 4.
  • Documented on-the-job training for the installation, maintenance, service, and repair of LV, MV and HV substation, powerplant electrical equipment, and specifically power and distribution transformers.

Technical Skills and Tools

  • High level field supervisory skills not only to supervise the crew members and subcontractors as assigned, but also to provide a healthy and environmentally friendly work environment.
  • Ability to multitask including experience in supervising a crew, sub-contractors, and vendors as required.
  • Must be able to provide technical instructions about required tasks to crew and subcontractors including safe and correct assembly and maintenance of power and distribution transformers and transformer accessories. This includes interpretation and following work scope, assembly, general arrangement drawings, electrical prints, and one-line diagrams as well as test data and factory instruction manual.
  • If not the assigned tester on a project, provide expert level support to assigned tester with industry standard testing of power and distribution transformers and transformer accessories as well as interpret and document the results. Document test results using standard Microsoft Office, test equipment, standard test software, and tools.
  • Performing power and distribution transformer receipt inspections including the completion of receipt inspection reports as per the standard and assigned processes.
  • Performing and directing crew members with the safe and correct operation of transformer oil processor including the performance of vacuum, oil filling, circulating, and draining oil-filled power and distribution transformers, and documenting the process as needed
  • Strong commercial and industrial electrical wiring and troubleshooting skills.

  • Capable of communicating with customer in a professional manner
  • Competency in computer skills including email, internet, data entry into online tools, and Microsoft and Windows based software.
  • Recommended to have and Maintain Class A CDL.
